How Do Business Owners Get Focused on TRUE Profitability?

Finding ways to add substance to their day, week and month often is problematic for small business owners. The below illustrates how one client looked at her struggle and what options she had available to deal with it:

Q: I make enough money to keep me in business and I have been OK for almost 4 years now. I must admit that a lot of what I do is almost 90% of the time is reactive as what I do involves keeping my customers happy. At the end of the day when I get home, I spend little time working on building before I fall asleep on the couch. When I wake up, I find myself in the same situation day after day. How can I reverse this trend?

A: Great question! You find yourself in the same “pit” that many other small business owners find themselves in on a regular basis. It seems they never get much done beyond just “staying afloat”. One solution to getting and staying ahead is the creation of documented S.M.A.R.T. goals. They are defined as those that are:

SPECIFIC – Includes who, what, when and how. Example: I will join a health club by Tuesday and workout 3 days a week.”

MEASURABLE - Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. Example: I will lose a minimum of 1.5 lbs. per week.

ALIGNED with your values – Ensure you work within your personal beliefs and ethically.

REALISTIC - It should be within your ability to achieve (perhaps with a stretch) and not outrageous or totally out of reach

TIME-BOUNDED – You must set a time or date of when you will accomplish your goal so you can push yourself towards it. Example: By “X” date, I will lose “Y” lbs.

This method may be uncomfortable at first, and will change your norm, but in short order you will be able to see and measure specific growth in the areas that you choose. Over time, you will see yourself becoming both a better planner and watch your business grow.
