Q: Sometimes with respect to specific goals that I have set for myself, it seems that I’m not able to attain them at the time I have set. In fact, several of them I had to reset the time period on 2 – 3 occasions. I really can’t put my finger on why this seems to be the case and it’s very frustrating. What the heck is going on?

A: It’s not uncommon for business owners to experience this phenomenon. It can often demotivate the less hearty enough to give up their business altogether and with some this is clearly not necessary.

If, for example, your goal is to double your productivity, the first thing to do is identify the different steps you will have to take to get from where you are today to a level of productivity twice where you are today. You then examine each of these steps and determine which step is the limiting factor that determines how fast you achieve your productivity goal.

A concept called the Theory of Constraints states that fully 80 percent of ALL the constraints that are holding you back from achieving your most desired goals are inside yourself. This means that 80 percent of the reasons for your lack of progress in whatever areas are in your control are your own habits, beliefs, attitudes and opinions as well as your own skills and abilities, or lack thereof.

Focus on 3 areas:

  1. Be clear about your goal
  2. Identify your limiting factor
  3. Focus on alleviating it

Successful people ask themselves the question “ what is it in ME that is holding me (or my business) back?” You are in control of yourself. You can have an enormous effect on what you do personally, or fail to do. As you can see, it’s more rewarding to focus on the 80 percent you control vs. the 20 percent that is out of your hands.
